A royal pavilion of extraordinary elegance — 11 lotus-petal arches, a fusion of Hindu and Islamic architecture, 500 years of near-perfect preservation in Hampi's royal zenana.
Lotus Mahal is one of the most elegant buildings in Hampi — a royal pavilion within the Zenana Enclosure that perfectly blends Hindu and Islamic architectural styles. Its name comes from the lotus-bud shaped arches and lotus-petal motifs adorning the roofline. The structure is built of lime plaster over brick, giving it a refined appearance unlike the granite temples nearby.
Lotus Mahal is included in Rock Shiva's Day 2 Heritage Tour as part of the Zenana Enclosure visit.
Built in the late 15th–16th century, Lotus Mahal's purpose has been debated — most historians believe it was a council chamber or recreational pavilion for the royal women. What makes it architecturally unique is the synthesis of styles: Dravidian tower meets Deccan Sultanate arches — reflecting the cosmopolitan culture of the Vijayanagara Empire at its height.
